Eligibility Criteria.

So, who can be lucky enough to receive the Bharat Ratna? Well, it's open to all Indian citizens, irrespective of their caste, gender, religion, or profession. You don't need to have an A-list celebrity status or be a Nobel laureate. As long as you've made exceptional contributions in your field, you're eligible. It's like saying, "Hey, you're awesome, and we recognize that!"

Nomination and Selection Process.

The selection process for the Bharat Ratna is no small ordeal. Nominations can come from anyone - Parliament members, state governments, and even private individuals. These nominations are carefully reviewed and analyzed by a committee consisting of the Prime Minister, the President, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha (the lower house of Parliament), and other eminent figures. It's like being judged by a panel of wise, discerning elders who hold the key to your dreams.

Noteworthy Recipients of the Bharat Ratna Award

Prominent Personalities from Arts and Literature.

Over the years, the Bharat Ratna has been bestowed upon a diverse array of remarkable individuals. From literary legends like Rabindranath Tagore and M. S. Subbulakshmi to iconic figures like Satyajit Ray and Lata Mangeshkar, it has recognized the immense artistic contributions of these legends.

Distinguished Contributors in Science and Technology

Science nerds, rejoice! The Bharat Ratna has also honored brilliant minds who have revolutionized the world of science and technology. From the likes of C. V. Raman, the Nobel laureate who discovered the Raman Effect, to A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the "Missile Man of India," this award has celebrated their remarkable achievements.

Recipients: Since its inception, the Bharat Ratna has been bestowed upon 53 individuals, including 18 posthumous recipients. Notable awardees include C.Rajgopalachari, the former Governor-Genral of the Union of India.

Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the former president of the Republic India.

Medallion: 

Recipients receive a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a peepal leaf-shaped medallion  (3.1mm thick, 4.7cm wide and approximately 5.8cm long.)

Notably, the award has been conferred on one naturalized citizen Mother Teresa and on two non Indians Abdul Gaffar khan And Nelson Mandela.
