Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, which is typically clear. For people who have cataracts, seeing through cloudy lenses is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up windowClouded vision caused by cataracts can make it more difficult to read, drive a car at night, or see the expression on a friend’s face. Let’s explore more about cataracts:

Symptoms of Cataracts

  1. Clouded, blurred, or dim vision
  2. Trouble seeing at night
  3. Sensitivity to light and glare
  4. Need for brighter light for reading and other activities
  5. Seeing “halos” around lights
  6. Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription
  7. Fading or yellowing of colors
  8. Double vision in one eye

Initially, the cloudiness caused by a cataract may affect only a small part of the eye’s lens, and you may not notice any vision loss. However, as the cataract grows larger, it clouds more of your lens, leading to noticeable symptoms.

Causes of Cataracts

Aging: Most cataracts develop due to natural changes in the eyes as you get older.

Injury: Trauma or injury to the eye can contribute to cataract formation.

Genetic Factors: Some inherited disorders increase the risk of cataracts.

Medical Conditions: Diabetes and other health conditions can lead to cataracts.

Long-Term Use of Steroids: Prolonged use of steroid medications may cause cataracts.

Other Eye Conditions: Certain eye conditions or past eye surgeries can also be contributing factors.

Remember, cataracts can be managed effectively through treatments such as surgery. If you notice changes in your vision, consider seeking an eye exam to address any concerns promptly.

Cataract surgery

Certainly! Let’s discuss the precautions before and after cataract surgery:

Before Cataract Surgery: Preparing for the Procedure

1.Consultation and Measurements:

- About a week before surgery, an ophthalmologist will measure the size and shape of your eye to select an appropriately sized replacement lens (intraocular lens or IOL).

- Discuss any medications or supplements you’re taking, as some may cause bleeding during surgery.

- Avoid eating or drinking anything (except water) for at least 6 hours before surgery.

- Clean your eyelids and eyelashes with baby shampoo the night before and on the morning of surgery to prevent infection.

2.Day of Surgery:

- Arrange transportation, as you won’t be able to drive after the procedure.

- Wear comfortable clothes and bring sunglasses to protect your eyes while going home.

- Have a family member accompany you, as you may feel tired or dizzy from anesthesia.

During Cataract Surgery: The Procedure

Anesthesia and Incisions:

You’ll remain awake during the surgery.

The surgeon numbs your eye with eye drops or an injection.

Small sutureless incisions are made near the edge of the cornea to access the lens.

Lens Removal:

The surgeon breaks up the cataractous lens using ultrasound (small-incision surgery) or removes it in one piece (extracapsular surgery).

An artificial lens is then inserted to replace the removed lens.
